Why did the US government just pull Anthropic's Fable 5 and Mythos 5?

On 12 June 2026 the US government issued an export-control directive barring foreign nationals from accessing Anthropic's newest models, Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, on national-security grounds. To comply, Anthropic disabled both models for every user worldwide. The trigger appears linked to a public "jailbreak" of Fable 5, though Anthropic disputes the basis and calls the flaw narrow and non-universal. For business, the real lesson is concentration risk: a frontier AI model can vanish overnight by government order, so critical work shouldn't depend on a single provider.
